Teaching Philosophy:

I believe the key to teaching is to make it exciting and fun. Once you have created a passion for music in the student, anything is possible. My approach to teaching involves making sure that my students learn to read music quickly so they can began to enjoy playing simple songs as soon as possible. I play along with my students to encourage and motivate them and I let them move at their own speed. I also make sure to offer lots of positive feedback as this will keep students motivated. Many students give up because they feel they aren't progressing fast enough or aren't good enough to play. I will ensure the student continues to enjoy music and inspire them with my own playing and compositions. I believe that any student can learn with a teacher who offers lots of positive feedback and makes learning fun.
I have both an upright grand and a Stage 2 Nord Synthesizer which is used by many professional musicians on stage. This synthesizer is able to play many classical piano sounds such as a grand piano and earlier keyboards such as clavier and harpsichord. It can also do 3 organ types and a large number of synthesizer sounds. It is a great instrument for learning to play rock piano and for composing/improvising. I also have an amplifier which plays drum loops and other synthesizer sounds to use for both my student and I to play along with. Intermediate students who have studied with me for a while will have a chance to play with my band at annual recitals.
My approach is to work closely with each student and to find out how they learn best. Piano is an ideal instrument to learn music on first because it makes theory easy and allows for playing and reading music in both the treble and bass clef.
-
I make learning music fun by teaching my students to learn how to play simple songs quickly
-
I make sure my students understand music theory so they understand the big picture and how music is constructed
-
I give new students a solid theory and classical background so they can transition to other music genres if they are interested
-
I share my own compositions with students and provide playlists of representative pieces of classical piano music so they are inspired and motivated to practice and improve
-
I provide plenty of opportunities for my students to perform at recitals and my studio has recording equipment so I can make recordings of their performances to share with family members
